A Doctor’s Date with Oxford

Timothy Liong Tipoe, a medical graduate of 2019, was awarded the Esther Yewpick Lee Millennium Scholarship to pursue a doctorate in clinical medicine at the University of Oxford starting October. Enrolled in the Global-Physician Leadership Stream during his study at CUHK, Timothy had been twice attached to Oxford’s Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, whose pioneering research inspired him to pursue further studies at Oxford. He will be working closely with the distinguished virologist Prof. John Frater to investigate the pathogenesis and viral mechanisms of AIDS and the immunology behind HIV, the virus causing the disease. In view of the ravages of COVID-19 in recent months, Timothy pointed out that recent studies by researchers had revealed possible interconnections of HIV, COVID-19 and other infectious diseases and certain anti-viral drugs have been explored as possible therapies for the coronavirus. He believes infectious disease research will be of utmost importance to medical care in Hong Kong, and hopes his study would help lift local healthcare and clinical research.
