The University Grants Committee (UGC) has given Dr. Carmen Wong, Assistant Dean (Education) of the Faculty of Medicine, the 2020 UGC Teaching Award (General Faculty Members) in recognition of her contribution and achievements in medical education and interdisciplinary/multi-sectoral educational collaborations.

Vice-Chancellor and President Prof. Rocky S. Tuan said, ‘I heartily congratulate Dr. Carmen Wong for gaining this exceptional recognition. Dr. Wong’s enthusiasm in medical education is most impressive. She inspires her students to solve problems with innovative thinking, guides them to develop professional skills and enriches their learning experience. She leads the inter-professional teams of clinicians and tutors to adopt a diversified approach to enhance teaching and learning quality. The University is proud of her achievements.’

Dr. Wong joined CUHK in 2010, committed to fostering professionalism in higher education. Through her novel use of design thinking that puts learners first, she has sought to develop their professional skills, enhance their ability to reflect on their thought processes, and improve the ways they interact with different communities and handle different situations in a professional context. Dr. Wong is also an accomplished researcher and innovator in the fields of family medicine training, clinical communication skills and health professions development, and is highly experienced in assessment methodology.

Dr. Wong is honoured to have received this distinguished award. She said, ‘This moment would not be possible without a fabulous team which make change happen. I wish to thank my colleagues for their dedicated support, encouragement and unwavering belief in education, as well as our community partners, family doctors and the supporting teams for their assistance in executing new initiatives tirelessly and resolving problems. Thank you to my family, all the students and patients I have journeyed with in the past decade, for their support.’ Dr. Wong will make use of the award grant to equip tutors with the skills for teaching professionalism and to encourage innovation and collaboration in curriculum design by promoting design thinking. She intends to establish a community of practice within and across disciplines, where a sustainable and responsive dialogue will be possible and resources available for students’ professional development.

Meanwhile, the UGC has given the 2020 UGC Teaching Award (Teams) to the inter-institutional AIE-AR team, of which Prof. Paul Lam of the Centre for Learning Enhancement And Research (CLEAR) was a member. The team has been dedicated to the use of Augmented Reality (AR) to present case-based scenarios where students can make decisions on and learn about academic integrity and ethics. A core member of the team, Professor Lam has applied relevant concepts to various courses at CUHK.
