CUHK confers four Honorary Fellowships

The University held its Nineteenth Honorary Fellowship Presentation Ceremony on 28 June. Four distinguished persons were appointed Honorary Fellows by Council chairman Dr. Norman Leung for their exceptional professional achievements and remarkable contributions to the University and the community.

Mr. Raymond Chan Wai-man

Mr. Raymond Chan Wai-man is chairman of The Shaw Foundation Hong Kong, managing director of the Shaw Group, chairman of The Shaw Prize Foundation, member of the Board of Advisors of The Sir Run Run Shaw Charitable Trust, and member of the Board of Trustees of Shaw College. Being with the Shaw Group for 27 years, he was in charge of the planning and construction of the Shaw Studios, the TVB City and the Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital in affiliation with the School of Medicine of Zhejiang University. With Mr. Chan at the helm, who adheres to the Shaw’s zealous support for education, the Foundation has supported the University’s development projects, scholarships and bursaries throughout the years. Towards the end of 2012, it made another sizable donation to the setting up of CUHK-Shenzhen. Thanks to Mr. Chan’s efforts, the Shaw Prize recipients are invited to CUHK every year to share their insights with students and members of the University.


Ms. Karen Cheung Tih-loh

Ms. Karen Cheung Tih-loh is the trustee and chief strategist of The D.H. Chen Foundation and executive director of Vervain Resources. Her grandfather was the late philanthropist Dr. Chen Din-hwa who founded the Nan Fung Group. Carrying forward the family’s altruism, she joined the Foundation to push for the development of local education. In 2015, Ms. Cheung set up The D. H. Chen Foundation Scholarship Programme to provide outstanding students from local universities with support on tuition fees and overseas exchange expenses. A school project, The inSpirEd, was launched by her and the Foundation together with the University’s Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research in 2017, which cultivates teachers’ own spiritual resilience to make spiritual education possible at school. Under her support, the Foundation made a generous donation to the building of the CUHK Medical Centre, fostering research and clinical services to the community.


Mr. Peter Hung Hak-hip

Mr. Peter Hung Hak-hip is the honorary chairman of Hop Hing Group, the city’s leading food and edible oil manufacturer. He had assisted the Group in going public, and during his tenure as chairman from 1990 to 2006, he expanded the Group’s reach into mainland China and developed fast-food business. Caring about the youth, he is the honorary life president of the Youth Arch Foundation and chairman of the Lion & Globe Educational Trust. The Foundation hosts the Hong Kong Outstanding Students Award and Youth Arch Student Improvement Award annually, nurturing students to become future leaders. Mr. Hung has also donated to the Faculty of Medicine to support the establishment of the Peter Hung Pain Research Institute, which focuses on pain prevention and treatment.


Prof. Ng Yuet-lau

Coming under the tutelage of late masters Prof. Chao Shao-an and Prof. Huang Junbi, Prof. Ng Yuet-lau is a celebrated painter of the third generation of Lingnan school. She is a member of the China Artists Association and president of the Hong Kong Lingnan Art Association. Keen to promote the arts of the Lingnan genre, she has taken on various teaching posts, including advisers to the Asia Research Programme of the University of Indianapolis and the Calligraphy and Painting Association of Fudan University. Prof. Ng has staged solo exhibitions over the world, in addition to numerous arts exhibits at CUHK. Her works are much sought after and extensively collected. In 2013, she was awarded the Certificate of Recognition by the Canadian Prime Minister and the Town of Richmond Hill in Toronto, and was listed among The World’s One Hundred Outstanding Chinese and named the World’s Outstanding Chinese in the subsequent year. An Honorary Fellow of S.H. Ho College, Prof. Ng has been coaching College students on painting. She has kindly bestowed on the College her painting, which carries the message of enlightening youth and passing on the heritage.
