M o r r i s Be r k ow i t z Dr. Morris Berkowitz received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Purdue University in 1952 and 1954 respectively. In 1956, he earned his Master of Arts degree in Sociology at Yale University and was awarded his Doctor of Philosophy degree, also in Sociology at Yale Univer sity in 1958. He was with Rand Corporation and System Development Corporation in Santa Monica, Cali fornia and Paramus, New Jersey from 1957 to 1962. While there, he participated in system research and system design, with emphasis on computerized control systems. He taught part-time at Columbia University in 1961 and in 1962. He resigned from his position as head of the simulation laboratory in Paramus and went to the University of Pittsburgh as Assistant Professor of Sociology with a join t appointment in the Management Science Center. He was promoted to his present position as Associate Professor in 1963. During this period, he was research consultant with the Pittsburgh Board of Public Education, The American Institute for Research, the Pittsburgh Commission on Human Relations, and other agencies. His many publications include two monographs in small group research (one in association with Omar K. M oo re ), and a book published by the University of Pittsburgh Press, Soci al Scientific Studies o f Rel igi on, in collaboration w ith J.E. Johnson. He is associated with the Regional Council fo r Internationa] Education, and served as associate director of a summer orientation centre fo r new foreign students going to the United States. His current interests are in the Sociology of Religion, Social Psychology, Methodology, and gene ral theory. COMINGS AND GOINGS ° Dr. James A . Olson, Professor and Chairman, Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Bangkok, visited United College on 16th March. He was received by Dr. S. C. Joseph Fu, Professor of Chemistry of the University, and was shown the Chemistry Department and its labora tories. 。 Dr. James J. Thomas of Jamaica, Sociologist and Educator, Area Secretary fo r the Board of World Missions of the Reformed Church in America, visited Chung Chi College and gave a series of public lectures on the influence of religion on the society. • M r. John James, Representative of the Asia Foundation, visited United College on 27th March. He was met by M r. T.C. Cheng, President, M r. S.K. Fang, Vice-President, M r. N.H. Young, Academic Registrar, M r. T.R. Liu , Deputy Re gistrar (Students) and the Deans of the Faculties of Arts, Commerce and Social Science, and Science. A fte r a general exchange of views, the visitor toured the College campus. • M r. N.H. Young, Academic Registrar of United College, left fo r the United States on 29th March to attend an Academic Deans Institute to be held in the University of Chicago during Ap ril. Organized by the American Council on Education, the Institute is an annual seminar for university administrators to study the dean's role in educational policy-making, evaluation of department administration and leadership, faculty recruitment and development, long-range planning and resource allocation, and student participation in academic administration. M r. Young is the first overseas candidate from Asia to attend a session of the Institute as it normally restricts participation to American university administrators only. — 3 —
