CUHK NEWSLETTER Champion Again in Chemistry Olympiad For tw o y e a r s i n succession, the University' s chemistry major s outdi d their coun t e r pa r t s f r o m other institution s o f highe r education an d capture d th e champion troph y i n th e annual Hon g Kon g Chemistry Olympiad. The Fift h Hon g Kon g Chemistry Olympia d jointl y organized by the Hong Kong Chemistry Societ y an d th e Royal Societ y o f Chemistry was hel d a t th e Hon g Kong Scienc e Museu m o n 22nd January . This yea r al l UPGC-funded tertiar y institutions except Lingna n College too k par t i n th e competition. Each tea m wa s give n a topi c a t 5.0 0 p.m . on e day befor e th e competition , and wa s require d t o giv e a 15-minute presentatio n o n the da y o f th e competitio n and t o answe r question s f r om a pane l o f j udge s and th e floor. Th e CUH K team wa s give n th e topi c 'Perfumes' and was selected by th e judge s a s th e tea m with th e bes t performance. CUHK tea m member s were Vanessa S. M. Au, Zoe T. W. ' . Speakers include d Prof . Lap-chee Tsui , Siu-lie n Ling Won g Visitin g Fello w 1993-94 fro m th e University of Toronto; Prof. Joseph C. K. Lee of the Departmen t of Anatomica l an d Cellular Pathology ; Dr. Che n T e o f th e Department o f Philosophy; Dr. Cheun g Yuet Wa h o f th e Department o f Sociology; and Dr . Ts o Wung Wa i o f th e Department o f Biochemistry. The function was attende d b y over 10 0 staf f an d students. Expert in Cystic Fibrosis Visits Chung Chi Prof. Lap-che e Tsui , worl d renowned molecula r an d medical geneticist and expert in cysti c fibrosi s researc h from Canada, visite d Chun g Chi Colleg e a s it s Siu-lie n Ling Won g Visitin g Fello w 1993-94 fro m 23r d Januar y to 4th February. During hi s visit , Prof . Tsui conducte d a serie s o f lectures o n topic s rangin g from 'My Colleg e Days' , 'How I Capture Opportunit y in Life' , 'Biologica l Technology and Morality' , t o ' The Cu r r e n t Ove r s e a s Chinese Society ' an d 'Ho w to Foste r Collaboratio n i n Research'. Having receive d hi s B.Sc. an d M.Phil . degree s from Th e Chines e University, Prof. Tsui furthered his studies a t th e Universit y o f Pittsburg an d obtaine d hi s Ph.D. degre e i n 1979 . H e was appointe d Seller s Chai r in Cysti c Fibrosi s Researc h at the University o f Toront o in 1989 , professo r o f molecular and medica l genetic s in 1990 , an d wa s electe d Howard Hughe s International Scholar i n 1991 .
