Prof. Lee is a prominent architect w i th extensive teaching and professional experience in urban studies. Under his chairship, the young Department o f Architecture at the University made landmark developments. The first batch o f Bachelor o f Architecture students graduated in 1994 and the Master o f Architecture Programme was launched in 1995. The department is now equipped w i th first-class teaching and research facilities including a professional library and laboratories for multimedia and virtual reality simulation. I n designing the department's c u r r i c u l um and research p r o g r amme s, Prof. Lee emphasized harmony w i th nature and gave high priority to the needs o f the users, the unique culture of the community, and other environmental factors. Under Prof. Lee's guidance, the department has been actively developing and p r omo t i ng research on urban housing i n ma i n l a nd China since 1994. The Centre for H o u s i ng Innovations, established for the construction o f high quality, high density, and affordable housing in mainland China, i s heavily involved in collaborative research w i t h public and academic institutions on the mainland in areas including housing prototype, energy efficiency, and GIS for housing. Cheng, professor in the Department o f Orthopaedics and Traumatology, has been appointed as visiting professor o f paediatric orthopaedics by the Sun Yat-sen University o f Medical Sciences in Guangzhou for two years f r om November 1998. Prof. Cheng has also been elected as secretary/treasurer o f the Western Pacific Orthopaedics Association ( WP O A) Paediatric Section for three years f r om November 1998. • Prof. Pang Chi-pui, professor in the Department o f Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, has been appointed as visiting professor by N a n j i ng Ra i l way Me d i c al College f r om November 1998. • Prof. Helen F.K.
