The event was organized by the U n i v e r s i t y 's H o n g K o n g L i t e r a t u re Re s e a r ch C e n t re a nd the U n i v e r s i ty Library System i n collaboration w i t h The Comme r c i al Press ( H K ) Ltd. The moderator o f the reunion was M r . Ch a r l es K w a n , r e t a il d i r e c t or o f T he C omme r c i al Press. M r . L a m Yut Ha n g, e x - p u b l i s h er o f The Chinese Student Weekly, gave a t a l k o n 'The Chinese Student Weekly in Retrospect' and M r s. R i ta Wo n g, senior s u b - l i b r a r i an o f the University Library System, introduced the web version o f the magazine. T he we e k l y, targeted at secondary a nd t e r t i a ry students, c o v e r ed a w i d e spectrum o f contents including literature, philosophy, music, f i l m, education, and c u r r e nt a f f a i r s. It h e l p ed to n u r t u re a considerable number o f local writers and artists. HK I APS New Book Shanghai-Hong Kong Development Institute Occasional Paper No. 8 Economic Growth and the Potential for Port Development in the Western Pearl River Delta By Yue-man Yeung, Jianfa Shen, and Li Zhang I S B N 962-441-808-X, paperback, 45 pages, H K $ 2 0 Fi rst Chinese Speaking Contest The New Asia-Yale-in-China Chinese Language Centre organized the first Chinese (putonghua and Cantonese) Speaking Contest for CUHK Students on 8th November. The contest was one of the major events for celebrating the 40th anniversary of the CLC. The adjudicators were Prof. Serena Jin, professor of translation, Mr. Clarence Yang, head of the putonghua channel of RTHK, and Dr. Wu Weiping (far right), director of the CLC. The winners received their prizes from Prof. Jack Cheng, pro-vice-chancellor, at the CLC banquet held on 28th November. Riding the Crest of a Wave A record number of 16 sailing boats from the new Water Sports Centre participated in the 17th Tolo Channel Regatta. This year CU sailing students and alumni members teamed up with the DEA Sailing Association to form a team (photo). Although the wind was not always as strong as many sailors would have wished for, all sailors completed the 12km race within the designated time limit.
