First Even CUHK Putonghua Day T he first CUHK Putonghua Day was held on 26th November at Cultural Square. Organized by the Centre for Re s e a r ch and D e v e l o p m e nt o f Putonghua Education and the Audio- Visual D i v i s i on, the day's activities included computerized putonghua test games, i n f o rmal debate, imp r omp tu s p e a k i n g , b o o t h games, p r og r amme performance, and book exhibition. There were professional putonghua instructors on duty to g i v e a d v i c e o n putonghua learning. Special guests at the opening ceremony included Prof. Billy So, associate p r o - v i c e- chancellor, Ms. Amy Y u i , d i r e c t o r o f administrative services, and Mr. Yang Kut Si, h e a d o f R T H K ' s Putonghua Channel. Team from the CUHK Mainland Undergraduate Association debating with representatives from St. Stephen's College Service to the Community and International Organizations • Prof. Fok Tai Fai, dean of medicine, has been appointed by the Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food as a member of the Hospital Authority for two years from 1st December 2004. • Rev. Prof. Lo Lung Kwong, associate professor in the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies, has been appointed as a member of the Disciplinary Committee Panel for three years from 16th January 2005 under the Social Workers Registration Ordinance. • Prof. Lin Hui, professor in the Department of Geography and Resource Management, has been invited by Jiangxi Normal University to serve as an honorary dean of the Institute of Ecological Engineering for three years from January 2004. • Prof. Cheung Kwong Yue Alex, professor in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, has been appointed as an honorary professor of the Chinese Language Institute of Anhui University (安徽大學漢語言文字研究所榮譽教授) . Awards • Prof. Wong Nai Ching Henry, professor of chemistry, has been elected as Fellow to the Third World Academy of Sciences. • Prof. Ng Kee Pui Dennis, professor in the Department of Chemistry, has been admitted as a Chartered Scientist by the Science Council, United Kingdom. • Prof. Tony Lee, professor of information engineering, Prof. Jie Huang, professor in the Department of Automation and Computer-Aided Engineering, and Prof. Zhou Xunyu, professor in the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, have been made IEEE Fellows for the class of 2005 by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. • Prof. Chan Wai Kwong Victor, professor in the Department of Music, has been presented the 2003 CASH Most Performed Works Award — Local Original Serious Work, by the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong (CASH) on 25th November 2004. • Prof. Chan Wing Wah, professor of music, has been presented the 2004 CASH Golden Sail Music Award — Best Serious Composition, by CASH on 25th November 2004. Liang Hall has been approved to be renamed the Lai Chan Pui Ngong Lecture Theatre (黎陳佩昂演講廳), in recognition of a generous donation of HK$9 million from Mr. Lai Seung-hung and Mrs. Lai Chan Pui-ngong.
