He was conferred the State Natural Science Award (2005), and was appointed Chang Jiang Scholar Chair Professor (2009) and Honorary International Chair Professor of Taipei Tech (2013). Before joining CUHK, he had worked for the Bank of America and IBM World Trade Corporation. He had served as pastor to the Rhenish Church and taught at Middlesex University, UK prior to joining CUHK in 1996. He was Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts (2004–2018), Founding Director of the Centre for the Study of Humanistic Buddhism (2005–2008), Founding Director of the Centre for Catholic Studies (2005–2008), Founding Director of the Centre for the Study of Islamic Culture (2015– 2016), and Associate Director of the Centre for the Study of Religion and Chinese Society (2001–2017). Prior to joining CUHK in 2014, he taught at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) (1995–2014) and Arizona State University (1990– 1995).
