Annual Report 2020–21

CUHK Annual Report 2020–2021 exchange platform for researchers from all over the world. In order to better coordinate the development of academic and research activities in the GBA, CUHK established an Office for Greater Bay Area Developments in 2020. The Office will continue to explore collaboration opportunities in GBA, such as the collaborations with Dongguan Municipal Government and projects in Qianhai Shenzhen. For instance, a Memorandum of Understanding was recently renewed between the Institute of Future Cities of CUHK and China Academy of Urban Planning and Design for a strengthened strategic partnership on exchanging innovation and technology. CUHK will continue to develop a culture of research excellence, with purpose and responsibility, making a positive impact to Hong Kong and beyond. Over the years, CUHK has devoted much effort to translate research and innovation (R&I) into projects that create societal impacts. Through capitalisation of intellectual properties, entrepreneurial activities and commercialisation of R&I projects, such transfer of knowledge from universities to society helps bring about socio- economic impact and improvements to the community and businesses. Knowledge transfer refers to the transfer and application of knowledge to benefit the community. We have successful cases such as non-invasive prenatal test and liquid biopsy, lung cancer targeted therapy, network coding and soybean genome research. To showcase our R&I achievements, the first-ever CUHK Innovation Day was held in September 2021 to demonstrate the pathway and continuum from research and innovation to commercialisation. Innovation in the areas of satellite and remote sensing applications, green energy and advanced material, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine were featured on the event day. Together with CUHK startup projects, the exhibition was held both online and offline on campus. Inspiring talks and panel discussions of Innovation Day were also broadcast live. We are pleased to note the significant progress made in several capital works on CUHK campus. The development of six new hostels for Chung Chi College, New Asia College, United College, Shaw College, Wu Yee Sun College and postgraduate students is in good progress. The University has also been successful in obtaining initial support for four capital projects, namely, (i) the Centralised General Research Laboratory Complex (Block 3) in Area 39 for biomedical research, teaching and learning and other related disciplines; (ii) the Engineering Building on Central Campus; (iii) the Innovation and Sustainability Building at Station Road; and (iv) another Teaching Building adjacent to the Art Museum. The proposed Teaching-Research Complex in Area 39 for the Faculty of Medicine, which is funded by the Food and Health Bureau, has already started the pre-construction activities and detailed design. Moreover, with the approval of funding from the Legislative Council Finance Committee, the construction of Centralised General Research Laboratory Complex (Block 2) commenced in fall 2021.
