Annual Report 2021–22
Report of the Council 71 6 th term HKSAR government: working hand in hand to ink a new chapter for Hong Kong CUHK has been working in close partnership with the 6 th term HKSAR government. The University made a landmark submission to the public consultation process ahead of the Chief Executive’s Inaugural Policy Address. The submission included a range of results-oriented, practical recommendations for how Hong Kong’s university system can contribute even more to the city and the nation. A key recommendation was an idea for a new Global 2+2 GBA degree programme to enable joint training of talents in both Hong Kong, and across the mainland border. The submission reflected on the unique role of Hong Kong’s universities under the One Country Two Systems framework as well as how universities can best respond to President Xi Jinping’s four hopes for Hong Kong. As the rest of the 2022-23 academic year unfolds, CUHK will spare no efforts in further collaborating with the HKSAR government on major initiatives such as the development of the Northern Metropolis, and practical initiatives designed to tell Hong Kong’s story on the global stage. 2.5 hectares to advance innovative biomedicine and transform healthcare delivery in Hong Kong The 2021 Chief Executive’s Policy Address included a commitment for the HKSAR government to grant CUHK with 2.5 hectares of land near the University MTR station and adjacent to the CUHK Medical Centre (CUHKMC) to construct an Institute of Innovative Biomedicine (IIB). This site will become home to a world-class centre of excellence to co-locate industry, pharmaceutical firms, clinicians and scientists to develop cutting edge treatments in areas such as epigenetics, genomic biomedicine, and nanomedicine, positioning Hong Kong as the nation’s leading biotechnology hub, fundamentally transforming patient care and creating new economic opportunities. The IIB will also see the development of phase two of CUHKMC which will enable the University’s hospital to be the beneficiaries of transformational discoveries and treatments emerging from the new Institute. Where great minds shine – CUHK’s 60 th anniversary The 2022-23 academic year will see CUHK celebrate its diamond jubilee, which is a major milestone in the University’s history. In Chinese culture, turning 60 represents the completion of a jiazi and the birth of a new cycle. The year will see the University celebrate with a range of flagship events, international conferences, student- led activities and joint showcases with our partners across the mainland. The entire University community is excited to celebrate this major achievement in partnership with the people of Hong Kong, our compatriots around the nation, and our friends around the world.
