Th e Graduat e Council consiste d o f th e Vice-Chancello r a s Chairman , th e thre e College Presidents , th e thre e Universit y Deans , th e Head s o f Divisions o f th e projecte d Graduat e School , th e Directo r o f th e School of Education, th e Universit y L i brar i an , an d a small numbe r of Professor s an d Reader s nominate d b y th e Vice-Chancellor . I t was forme d t o dea l wi t h matter s o f polic y relatin g t o graduat e studies an d t o pla n fo r th e establishmen t o f th e Graduat e School . I n i t i a l ly th e Schoo l wa s compose d o f onl y five division s w i t h the Vice-Chancellor servin g concurrentl y a s Dean. On l y thirty-on e students wer e admitte d i n 1966-67 . Thi s modes t beginnin g wa s i n consonance wi t h th e basi c polic y recommende d b y th e Graduat e Council tha t th e Universit y shoul d introduc e a graduat e studie s programme i n any given discipline only when the required academi c leadership an d adequat e librar y an d othe r facilitie s ar e available . This polic y w i l l hel p ensur e hig h qualit y i n graduat e student s an d vital progres s i n research . W i t h th e completion o f the Universit y L i b r a r y an d the Scienc e Centre o n th e Shati n campu s th e Graduat e Schoo l ha s bee n abl e since 1970-7 1 t o set up nine new divisions. Dr . C.T . Yung, Presiden t of Chun g Ch i College , wa s concurrentl y appointe d t o succee d th e Vice-Chancellor a s hea d o f th e School . I n 1973-7 4 enrolmen t increased t o 174 , si x time s tha t o f 1966—67 , whe n th e Schoo l wa s first launched . Since 196 7 a tota l o f 25 8 student s hav e earne d thei r Master' s degree i n th e fourtee n division s o f the Graduat e School . A t presen t two categorie s o f Master' s degre e programme s ar e offered , a two - year programm e fo r Maste r o f Philosoph y (M.Phil.) , Maste r o f Business Administration (M.B.A. ) an d Master o f Di v i n i ty (M.Div.) , and a one-yea r programm e fo r Maste r o f Art s i n Educatio n an d Master o f Scienc e i n Electronics . The Graduat e Schoo l ha s bee n establishe d w i t h car e an d thoroughness an d th e Universit y i s no w abl e t o mov e forward, aided t o a great exten t b y the progress made i n its physical development programme, th e movin g o f Un i t e d an d Ne w Asi a College s from th e urba n area s t o th e Shati n campu s an d a gran t fro m th e Ford Foundatio n t o furthe r graduat e education . Advanced studie s an d researc h o n contemporar y problem s i n Asia an d othe r area s w i l l b e encourage d i n th e variou s division s o f the Graduat e School .
