The 1720-pag e tom e fill s th e vo i d lef t b y Ma t hews ' Chinese-English Dictionary, firs t publishe d in 1931 . I t i s as much a scholastic achievement as it i s a n instanc e o f service t o th e commun i t y an d th e wi de r wo r l d o f learning . A n English-Chinese Glossary of Applied Legal Terms, starte d i n November 197 2 a t th e reques t o f th e Hon g K o n g Governmen t , was complete d i n Novembe r 197 3 an d i s du e t o b e publishe d b y the Gove r nmen t Printe r i n 1974 . I n add i t i o n t o legal terms , relevan t subject categories , contextua l an d frequentl y use d word s an d phrases ar e included . I n vie w o f the fac t tha t 98 % o f the popu l a t i o n o f Hon g K o n g i s Chinese , th e Glossary w i l l b e o f immens e valu e i n f u r t he r i ng th e us e o f Chines e a s an officia l language . I n Jun e 197 1 a ne w Centr e fo r Tr ans l a t i o n Project s wa s established w i t h th e assistanc e o f a three-yea r gran t f r o m Th e Asi a Founda t i on.
