Th e Counc i l wa s established i n Ho n g K o n g i n 197 0 an d sinc e the n ha s hel d conference s i n Na r a, J apa n (1971) , Jogjakarta , Indonesi a (1972) , Ch i angma i , Tha i l and (1973 ) an d Hon g K o n g (1974) . Th e lates t conferenc e wa s hosted b y th e tw o loca l universitie s i n respons e t o th e expres s goa l of th e Luc e Founda t i o n an d th e I . I . E . t o promot e “ i n t e r na t i ona l understanding betwee n Eas t an d Wes t " . The i n t e r na t i ona l dimensio n o f th e Un i ver s i t y L i b r a r y ha s s imi l ar ly bee n enriche d b y contribution s o f book s f r o m variou s governments: Austria , Belgium , Egyp t , France , Ge rmany , I t a l y , Japan, Ko r ea , th e Netherlands , No rway , Pakistan , Singapore , th e Un i t ed K i n g d om , an d th e Un i t e d States . I n t erna t i onal Foundat ions W i t h i n th e i n t e r na t i ona l academi c wo r l d , th e variou s international foundations hav e played v i t a l role s in assisting The Chines e University t o achiev e it s distinctiv e purposes .
