Thi s developmen t wa s Th e Chines e University' s response t o tw o kind s o f need : (1 ) th e critica l shortag e o f professionally trained secondar y schoo l teacher s i n Hon g K o n g ; an d (2 ) the professiona l educatio n need s o f th e University' s graduate s wh o take u p teachin g a s a caree r (abou t on e ha l f of the graduate s o f th e Un i ve r s i ty hav e j o i ne d th e teachin g profession) .
