orientated programme, in which constant contact among teachers and students is required. While the first residence will be read y before the end of 1979, the other tw o wi ll be built on another site and is expected to begin construction sometime in 1979. The proposed minor staff quarters for 100 bachelors will be s o designed that the building can be readily assigned to married staff when the need arises. Lion Pavilion A Chinese style circular pavilion on the islet in the Lily Pond will be built on the Chung Chi College campus. The total construction cost of the Pavilion was donated by the Lion's Club of Kowloon Central. The ceremony for unveiling of plaque of the Pavilion was held in June 1978 and the structure is expected to be complete d before the end of 1979. Fong Shu-Chuen Building The Fong Shu-Chuen Building will be built on a site near the Lily Pond at Chung Chi College. It is named for Mr. Fong Shu-Chuen in honour of his 80th birthday w i th a generous donation of HK$ 1.5 million by his family. The 3-storey Building will be reserved for the exclusive use of the Chinese Language Centre wi th a liaison office for the IASP programme on the third floor. This Building will not only solve the space problem of the Centre once for all, but wil l greatly enhance the teaching of Chinese to foreign students under IASP and the California exchange programme. As th e donor said: “The Chinese University would contribute more to the cultural interflow and international friendship." The constructio n of the Building is expecte d to be completed before the end of 1979. Total Education for Students The above group of buildings, completed or under construction or under serious preparation, covered by the period of this Report, are focused on the students. The measure of the achievements o f a university is its end-products—students, whether they possess the leadership quality or the ability to make quic k and important decisions in a highly complex society. No effort has been spared by the University to give the students a " t o t al education". Thus the spectator stand and tennis courts provide them wi th more athletic activities. More hostel s create opportunities for students to live together and learn more about other people as well as themselves, enjoying the wholesomeness of community life. The extension of the Health Centre renders mor e health services. More staff quarters foster better and closer staff-student relationship, thus complementing the student-orientated programme. Estate and Maintenance Building With the large increase of new buildings, i t can be said that the physical development programme of the University has been largely realized. No major building is lacking for the time being, except for new 93
