A f t e r carefu l t hough t an d som e effort , i t wa s agree d i n 1984/8 5 t o establish a new Englis h Languag e Teachin g U n i t ( E L T U ) , t o wh i c h about hal f o f th e Englis h teacher s wer e transferred . Th e ne w E L T U became responsibl e f o r th e teachin g o f Englis h t o student s o f th e Un i ve r s i ty i n general , wh i l e th e majo r an d m i no r programme s i n English literatur e continu e t o b e th e responsibilit y o f th e remainin g half o f th e Depa r tmen t o f English . Th e t w o reconstitute d unit s hav e wo r k ed smoo t h l y since , show i n g tha t th e ide a behin d th e reorganization has bee n a sound one . First establishe d i n 1974 , the Facult y o f Busines s Adm i n i s t r a t i o n has bee n a pioneering effor t o n th e par t o f th e Un i ve r s i t y . Ov e r th e years th e Facult y ha s graduall y bu i l t u p a host o f degre e an d d i p l om a programmes a t many differen t levels , an d ha s made considerabl e contribution to th e educatio n o f a new generatio n o f H o n g Ko n g managers. I a m gla d t o repor t tha t a new Ad v i s o r y Boar d o n Ac c oun t i n g Studies wa s establishe d i n 1982 , and the Un i ve r s i t y i s greatl y indebte d to it s f ound i n g chairman , Si r Sidne y Go r don , unde r whos e distinguished leadership th e Boar d gav e a grea t dea l o f usefu l hel p an d advice, leadin g t o th e subsequen t i ns t i t u t i o n o f a n Internshi p Programme i n Ac coun t i n g i n 1984 . A t th e same time , unde r th e impac t o f rapid expansio n i n term s o f bo t h studen t number s an d th e variet y o f programmes offered , th e Facult y bega n t o fee l th e nee d f o r a ne w structural f r amewo r k t o mak e mor e effectiv e an d flexible us e o f it s human resources , i f th e increasin g an d diversifie d socia l nee d f o r it s service arisin g f r o m a burgeoning mode r n econom y i s t o b e satisfied . Thus th e searc h f or a new mod e o f Facult y integratio n an d reorganization began. Thi s i s a complex tas k r equ i r i n g th e carefu l examination o f many issues , bu t I a m f u l l y confiden t tha t a concensu s w i l l i n du e course b e reache d i n th e Faculty , an d a new organizationa l mod e w i l l emerge wh i c h w i l l enabl e i t t o fac e th e man y ne w challenge s w i t h renewed vigour .
