Vice-Chancellor's Report 1987-90
Vice-Chancellor's Report continuous expansion in postgraduate programmes and enrolment figures, however, the percentage of students being so accommodated dropped from 80 in 1987-88 to 71 in 1989-90. The shortage of hostel places is expected to become more serious in future. Campus Development The period also saw the completion of the following major buildings: the Forum completed in December 1987 to beautify the central campus; the John Fulton Centre completed in December 1988 as an amenities centre for staff and students; the Lady Shaw Building completed in March 1989 for teaching purposes; and the Shaw College Complex completed in July 1989 to provide facilities for the University's fourth constituent college. A number of other important projects are under construction or active design. Details listed in the relevant appendix show how the University has grown 'physically' over the last three years and how it w i ll further develop in the near future. Major Donations Instead of giving a comprehensive list of donations received over the period, the appendix on donations records only major contributions of HK$500,000 and above. It must be emphasized however that the University is grateful to all benefactors irrespective of the size of their donations, and that official acknowledgement has been given to each and every donation in the Chinese University Bulletin published quarterly by the University between 1987 and 1990. Annual Accounts Government subvention through the University and Polytechnic Grants Committee continued to be the University's major source of operating revenue, making up over 88 per cent of the University's annual income from 1987 to 1990. Details about staff publications in the three-year period and the University's recent research activities w i ll be separately recorded in two supplements to this report, the Staff Publications List 1987-90 and the Research Projects Summary 1989-90’ soon to be published by the University.
