T h r o u gh exchange p r og r amme s, b i l a t e r a l a nd consortial agreements, a nd research c oope r a t i on, students a nd f a c u l ty benefited f r om visit s to partner institutions the w o r l d over a nd return-visits f r o m their counterparts to The Chinese Un i v e r s i t y. D u r i n g the year the Un i v e r s i ty r e n ewed a nd extended the i mp o r t a nt relationshi p w i t h the Un i v e r s i ty of California System; a special H o n g Ko ng 1997 programme has been initiate d to ma rk the 30th anniversary of cooperation and exchange between the t wo institutions. I n the area of student exchange, the Un i v e r s i ty currently conducts over 30 bilateral or consortial student exchange p r og r ammes w i t h overseas partners. I n 1995-96, some 90 i n c om i ng exchang e students f r om different parts of the w o r l d attended the University's academic p r o g r amme s. Ov er 80 o u t g o i ng C U H K exchange students bene f i t ed f r om extended study i n Japan, Korea, Canada and the Un i t ed States. M a n y other students also participated i n short-term oversea s experiences i n different countries.
