研 究 Research 引言 Introduction 香港中文大學向來著重研究；教師透過學術研究一方面創造新知，一方面改善教學。研 究是學系的職責，校方定期審核其研究成果，並根據評核結果釐定學系部分應得經費。 校方亦鼓勵教師參與策略性重點研究。策略性重點研究方向每每經深思熟慮而訂定，選 題須配合大學本身長處和客觀條件。另一方面，校方大力支持個別教師按本身興趣和專長自 由選擇研究課題。身在前線的研究人員畢竟最清楚課題的意義和可行性；由上而下，有時免 不了算有遺策，錯失機會。況且，學術研究百花齊放，大學更顯得活力充沛。 The University has always stressed the importanc e of research, and expects its academic staff to engage i n research both for the creation of knowledge and for imp r ov i n g teaching. Research output f r om each department is systematically scrutinized, and the outcome affects a portion of the departmental one-line budget. Wi t h i n this framework, the University attempts to strike a balance between defining broad strategic directions and allowing staff the freedom to pursue projects of their choice. Strategic research directions are developed through the conscious selection of areas of strength and circumstantial advantages. The University rewards research teams that identify important issues and that devote concerted and sustained efforts toward s such issues. However, i nd i v i dual researchers are also given the freedom to select their own research direction since they are the best judges of significance and feasibility; new opportunities may not initially be visible to those in charge of strategi c planning, and diversity is in itself a source of vitality for the University. 研究經費 Research Funding 一九九五至九六年度本校研究經費主要仍來自香港研究資助局之競爭性撥款，校內同人 歷年均參與競逐，獲得鉅額資助，成績騎人。 其他研究經費來源包括研究資助局直接撥款一千四百九十萬元，用以贊助小型項目；以 及中央撥款二百九十萬元，用以添置大型研究設施。另裘槎基金會撥款一百七十一萬元，資 助四項研究；而英國香港聯合研究計劃亦捐貲四萬三千餘英鎊，贊助七項計劃。 此外，教研人員也為各自的研究開發資源，爭取經費。有六項具工業應用潛力的研究， 獲工業署工業支援資助計劃撥款四百二十四萬元；另有十一項醫學計劃獲醫療服務研究委員 會資助三百九十萬元。 校方每年從政府提供的整體撥款和私人捐贈抽調款項，用作研究經費，由研究委員會分 配予不同學科的研究項目。一九九五至九六年度該等撥款高達一千萬元，用以補助研究資助 Research 研究 27
