A p r og r amme to organize ou t i ng s a nd recreational activities for c h i l d r en w i t h cancer was l aun c hed i n c o n j u n c t i on w i t h the i n t e r n a t i o n al v o l u n t a ry o r g a n i z a t i o n, C a mp Qu a l i t y. A mu l t i- disciplinary oesophagea l cancer clinic was established at the Sir Y. K. Pao Centr e for Cancer, b r i n g i ng together experts of various specialities to treat patients. I n d u s t r i a l s u p p o rt projects of great relevanc e to the c ommu n i t y were i n i t i a t ed by University researchers under the sponsorship of the I ndu s t ry Department. Thes e included the application of n ew technologies to th e f o rmu l a t i on of preservation solution for organ t r ansp l an t a t i on , d e s i g n i ng high-capacity n e t w o rk infrastructures for Internet service p r o v i de r s , i n t eg r a t i ng data services on d i g i t al Eu r o p e an cordless telecommunications systems, and the de v e l opment of a portable fibre optical particle sizin g sensor for local industries. A n Electronic News Me d ia and Publishing Co n s o r t i um was f o u n d ed d u r i ng th e year on the initiative of the University. Sponsore d b y the I n d u s t ry Department, the consortiu m serves as a site for the local media an d p u b l i s h i ng i n d u s t ry to test electronic i n f o rma t i on delivery, retrieval and library services. Last b ut not least, a total of 4,12 6 students graduated f r om the University i n 1995-96.
