arranged exchange programmes, postgraduate studies, conferences, and study tour s abroad. I n v i ew of the sharp increase i n t u i t i on fees in recent years, there was a g r ow i ng demand f r om students for financial assistance. Although the majority of the needy students were able to obtain financial help f r om the Government Local Financial Assistance Scheme, there were some who, for various reasons, could not benefit f r om the scheme and had to t u rn to the University for assistance. In 1995-96, a total of HK$4.9 million was give n out, of which HK$3.67 million was disbursed i n the f o rm of loans and th e balance in the f o rm of bursaries. In order to encourage students to mak e better use of the summer months by engaging themselves i n useful courses or in study tours, travel loans and summer loans were offered and HK$0.77 million was given ou t for these purposes. I n 1995-96, 918 students took part i n th e University and College Student Campus Wo r k Schemes, for wh i ch some HK$1.93 million was disbursed. 心理輔導 Psychological Counselling Service 學生事務處之心理輔導組為協助學生適應大學生活,加強個人人格的發展及保持心理健 康,繼續提供心理上的治療、預防及教育服務。是年接受輔導或參與該組活動的學生逾五百 名,其中六成是主動求助,三成為健康問卷調查後需要跟進服務的一年級新生,其餘則由大 學保健處、各學系及行政部門轉介。該組亦經常舉辦小組活動,以培養學生自助能力及促進 心理健康;又為校內有關部門舉辦工作坊,須經常接觸學生的教職員可藉此提高對心理問題 的認識並改善輔導技巧。 The main functions of psychological counsellin g are to facilitate students' adjustment to the University, enhance their personal development, and promote mental health w i t h in the campus community. Services to students ma y be remedial, preventive, or educational i n nature. I n 1995-96 ove r 500 students sought counselling services or participated in various programmes organized by the Psychological Counselling Un it of the Office o f Student Affairs. Amo ng those who received individual counselling service, about 60 per cen t were self-referrals while 30 per cent were first-year students who require d follow-up service after participating in the annual mental health screening exercise. The res t were referred by other academic, administrative or medical staff of the University. Groups and workshops focusing on self-enhancement and mental health education were periodically organized for students; paracounselling training and consultation was also offered to University staff who had frequen t contact w i t h students. 學生 Students 52
