The assessmen t is conducted triennially and the last exercise was completed in early 1999. The University also identified 24 areas of excellence in teaching and research during the year for priority support, fully realizing that in lean years, the best approach would be to build on existing strengths in order to remain viable and competitive. The University is confident that all 24 areas will contribute significantly to the social, economic, cultural and scientific development of both the local and international communities, and be instrumental in placing the University among world-class universities. Eight of them were eventually shortlisted by the UGC for consideration for capital investment so that they can be further developed to achieve international standing. 校長報告 Vice-Chancellor's Review 6
