Annual Report 1998-99
HK$27.5 million, representing 26 per cent of the entire UGC allocation of HK$105 million for the 1998-99 exercise. The 10 projects so supported would certainly encourage innovation in instruction and improv e teaching and learning in different subject disciplines. So that students coul d master the essential tools for learning, a web-based training and test package of basic IT skills was specially designed this year to help them attain a required level of IT literacy; student feedback on various language enhancement programmes was also carefully monitored to ensure that the programmes are effective in improvin g their language proficiency. The University is most proud to record that, consequent upon these and other efforts to ensure teaching and learning quality, it has continued to attract students of very high calibre. Admission figure s for 1998 show that 94 per cent of the students admitted through the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) in the year were Band A applicants, meaning that they had chosen CUHK programmes as their first, second, or third choice programmes. And of the 2,856 full-time ne w undergraduates, 1,697 were admitted to their first choice programmes, representing 34.5 per cent, or the highest percentage, of first choice JUPAS applicants admitted by all UGC-funded institutions. r e s e a r c h a n d t e c h n o l o g y t r a n s f e r On another front, the University has continued to lead all other UGC - funded institutions. By May 1999, a total of 570 completed research projects funded by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC) had bee n assessed by the RGC. Sixty-seven were rated as 'excellent'. Of these 67 projects, 30, or 45 per cent, were undertaken b y CUHK staff. The University currently leads the second institution on the list by a wid e margin of 11 excellent projects. Such research excellence is the combined result of the competence and 校長報告 Vice-Chancellor's Review 5
