Donations in kind and donations under HK$500,000 received in the period were too numerous to record in this report. Finance and Accounts The outbreak of SARS in 2003 caused classes to be suspended for two weeks in April and put a hold on many of the University's 40th anniversary celebratory activities. As a result, a lower expenditure level for the year was recorded. After transferring $115 million to the reserves, the University reported a modest net surplus of $52 million for the year. Total general income was $2,945 million, slightly less than last year. The UGC Recurrent Block Grant of $2,302 million was fractionally higher than that for 2001-2, but fee income stayed flat at $511 million, as the level of tuition fee had been frozen for another year. Thanks to the adoption of a pro-active investment strategy, interest and investment income attained the respectable level of $63 million in 2003 despite low interest rates. Donations, Finance and Accounts 107
