Annual Report 2002–03

Undergraduates recruited from the mainland in 2002 via a special scholarship scheme learning package. Designed by the Independent Learning Centre, the package provided greater flexibility for students in learning English. It could also give students some idea of their English standard and direct them to relevant web links for further self-access learning. Recruitment of Outstanding Secondary 6 Students The University launched an Early Admissions Scheme (EAS) in March 2002 in response to a recommendation made by the Education Commission to grant priority admission to a small number of outstanding Secondary 6 students. The University believed the scheme would inject a dose of flexibility into Hong Kong's relatively rigid admissions system, and give capable students more incentive to begin their undergraduate study earlier in Hong Kong. In 2003, the University admitted 174 outstanding Secondary 6 students under the Early Admissions Scheme. Recruitment of Non-local Undergraduates The University has been recruiting non-local undergraduates via a special scholarship scheme since 1998. About 30 undergraduates are recruited annually from partner institutions on the mainland. The University also recruits fee-paying non-local undergraduates from nearby regions. In 2003, over 1,000 applications were received from the mainland, Macau, Japan, Canada, India, the Philippines, Singapore, and Malaysia. These admission exercises aim at enriching the cultural diversity on campus, enhancing the quality of student intake and making the University a regional centre of higher education. Academic Development 23
