校長報吿 VICE-CHANCELLOR'S REVIEW 前言 無論是對我個人，或是對香港中文大學來説，二 零零二至二零零三年度都是不可逆料，充滿挑戰 的一年。 我原定於二零零二年十二月退休，告別服務了三 十多年的中文大學，怎料前任校長李國章敎授於 任內請辭，出任特區政府的敎育統籌局局長，大 學校董會遂於二零零二年八月委任我出掌校政， 直至中大聘得新校長為止。 大學一方面成立校長遴選委員會，物色下任校長 的理想人選，另方面積極籌劃二零零三年開始的 四十周年校慶活動。但是突發事情接腫而至， 是 關 於 大 學 合 併 的 爭 論 ， 後 有 非 典 型 肺炎 ( S A R S ) 的爆發，期間從敎學醫院到大學校園， 都彷彿進入了戰爭的狀態。 當我們從對抗 S A R S 的戰爭中稍稍喘過氣來，立 即加速推動大學敎育資助委員會(敎資會)所提出 的等額補助金計劃捐款工作；接著我們又遇到大 學削資的問題。由於 S A R S 嚴重地打擊了本地經 濟，政府預計來年的財赤將極為巨大，需要全面 收縮開支，敎資會對本地院校的資助，亦面臨大 幅的削減，我們也需因應資源的收縮，重新檢視 大學的運作和長期規劃。 A Year of Unexpected Happenings The year 2002-3 has been a most eventful and challenging year both for myself and for the University. In full expectation to retire by December 2002 after more than three decades of service at the University, I found myself assuming vice- chancellorship in the middle of the year upon the resignation of Prof. Arthur K.C. Li, who went on to become Secretary for Education and Manpower of the HKSAR on 1st August 2002. A Search Committee for the Appointment of the Vice-Chancellor was set up soon afterwards and my term as vice-chancellor is to last until a new leader for the University has been identified. 金耀基校長於就職典禮上 （二 零零 二年十二月五日） The installation of Prof. Ambrose Y.C.
