Launch ceremony of the Satelite Remote Sensing Receiving Station Phase I Links with Mainland China and Taiwan The 2004-05 academic year w a s a mo st e x c i t i ng one d ue to m u l t i f a r i o us o p p o r t u n i t i es for academic linkage w i t h institutions i n ma i n l a nd China. The Un i v e r s i ty ma de g o od progress i n academic a nd research collaboration w i t h the ma i n l a n d. Supported by the 863 Hi-Tech Research a nd De v e l o pme nt P r o g r amme of the M i n i s t ry of Science a nd Technology, a nd the I n n o v a t i on a nd Technology C omm i s s i on of the H K S AR Go v e r nme n t, the Satelite Remo te Sensing Re c e i v i ng S t a t i on l a u n c h ed the first phase of its o p e r a t i o n. By c a p t u r i ng a nd processing satellite-sourced r emo te sensing data, the s t a t i on p r o v i d es u s e f ul i n f o r ma t i on o n all-weather e n v i r o nme nt a nd natural disasters i n H o n g K o n g, South Ch i na a nd n e i g h b o u r i ng regions. A s a p a rt of the n a t i o n al geographic m o n i t o r i ng system, it serves as a strategic p l a t f o rm to enhance technological collaboration between H o n g K o n g and the mainland. The station is an i mp o r t a nt facility of the Institute of Space a nd Earth I n f o r ma t i on Science. I n N o v emb er 2004, the Centre of H o u s i ng I n n o v a t i o ns ( CH I ) of the De p a r t me nt of Architecture entered into a collaborative agreement w i t h the Ch i na A c a d emy of U r b a n P l a n n i ng a nd Design. Research f i n d i n gs of C H I w i l l be p u t into practice to develop u r b an p l a n n i ng o n the ma i n l a n d. The H o n g K o n g Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies a nd the Central Policy U n i t of the g o v e r nme nt j o i n t ly organized the first Pan-Pearl River Delta De v e l o pme nt F o r um i n December 2004. M r. Wa ng Guangtao, Minister of the M i n i s t ry of Construction, a nd Mr. X u Gu a n h u a, Minister of the M i n i s t ry of Science a nd Technology, were a p p o i n t ed h o n o r a ry professors of the De p a r t me nt of Architecture a nd the Faculty of Engineering respectively. Starting f r om the 2005-06 student intake, C U H K was the first amo ng local universities to take part i n the N a t i o n al Colleges a nd Universities En r o l me nt System, t h r o u gh w h i c h it was able to reach over four m i l l i on candidates i n 13 provinces and four cities o n the mainland.
