Highlights of Research Activities Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research Three n o t e w o r t hy projects, namely, ' M o n i t o r i ng the Qu a l i ty of Ed u c a t i on i n H o n g Ko n g: P r og r amme for International Student Assessment ( HK - P I SA Project)', 'Further Study of the Evaluation on the Implementation of the Me d i um of Instruction Guidance for Secondary Schools', and ' Qu a l i ty Schools I mp r o v eme nt Project', have made significant contributions to facilitate further development of schooling i n H o ng Kong. Research Centre for Contemporary Chinese Culture Funded by the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange, the Research Centre for Con t empo r a ry Chinese Cu l t u re of the Institute of Chinese Studies has launched an i n t e r n a t i o n al research p r o j e ct e n t i t l ed ‘ C o n f u c i an T r a d i t i o ns a nd the P o l i t i c o - C u l t u r al Transformation of China, Japan and Korea i n the Nineteenth Century: A Comparative Study' w i t h the participation of scholars f r om mainland China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea. Hong Kong Bioinformatics Centre Funded by the Innovation and Technology Commission of H o ng Kong, a project on the genome of the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) has set u p relational databases of the clinical data and genome i n f o rma t i on. H B V strains are then categorized into different subclasses and the f i nge r p r i nt of each subclass is elucidated. Institute of Chinese Medicine The Institute of Chinese Medicine received a five-year grant f r om the US National Institutes of He a l th to establish an International Collaborative Botanical Research Centre w i t h Memo r i al Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center at N ew York to develop herbal medicines for cancer. Hong Kong Cancer Institute Its Comp r e h e n s i ve Cancer Trials U n i t is the p r i n c i p al i n v e s t i g a t or of t w o mu l t i - c e n t re international trials w i t h the US National Cancer Institute and the Cancer Research-UK. Research Output Publications Research o u t p ut takes the f o r m of conference papers, books, monographs, reviews, or articles published i n prestigious international and local journals. For the year 2004-05, over 4,600 items of research o u t p ut were recorded. Patents As of June 2005, the University and its staff secured four registered trademarks and 54 patents (30 US Patents, 1 European Patent, 8 Chinese Patents, 5 Taiwanese Patents and 10 H o n g Ko ng Patents), covering diverse fields i n pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, material science, information technology, a nd me d i c al technology.
