Student Counselling and Development Service I n 2004-05, the S t u d e nt C o u n s e l l i ng a n d D e v e l o p m e nt Service p r o v i d e d a w i d e r a n ge of preventive, r eme d i al a nd d e v e l o pme n t al c o u n s e l l i ng services to students. Overall, about 400 students benefited f r om i n d i v i d u al counselling service wh i le 3,000 students attended the various d e v e l o pme n t al p r o g r ammes organized b y the service d u r i ng the year. H e l p i n g f r e s hmen to achieve a s mo o th t r a n s i t i on f r o m s e c o n d a ry school to the U n i v e r s i ty r ema i n ed a p r i ma ry focus of the service's w o r k i n the first term. This year, ' Pu r s u i ng y o ur Ideal U L i f e' a n d 'Seeking Pe r s o n al G r o w t h i n C U ' w e re the ma j or t h emes for its a n n u al 'Self- enhancement Camp a i gn for Freshmen'. These themes were chosen to encourage n ew students to p u r s ue personal goals a nd ma ke g o o d use of o p p o r t u n i t i es for self-enhancement d u r i n g their university education. The campaign i n c l u d ed presentations i n College General Education Classes, h e a l th survey, f o l l o w - up c o u n s e l l i ng a nd the p u b l i c a t i on of a self-help p amp h l et o n change- ma n a g eme nt and goal-setting. E f f o r ts to f a c i l i t a te the i n t e g r a t i on of n e w s t u d e n ts i n t o the U n i v e r s i ty i n c l u d ed v a r i o us orientation p r o g r ammes for non-local undergraduate students and postgraduate students. M i n i - s u r v e ys we re c o n d u c t ed i n an a t t empt to u n d e r s t a nd the needs a nd experiences of specific student groups such as ma i n l a nd undergraduate students, postgraduate students, a nd students a dm i t t ed u n d er the Early Adm i s s i o ns Scheme. D u r i n g the year, the service also o r g a n i z ed a nd collaborated w i t h v a r i o us u n i ts i n d e l i v e r i ng d e v e l o pme n t al p r o g r ammes a i med at enhancing students' self-understanding, self-confidence, self-management a nd interpersonal skills as w e l l as cross-cultural adjustment. To p r omo te mental health awareness, the service's web page was further enhanced to strengthen its education a nd publicity functions. Self-management pamphlets o n relaxation exercises, s t u dy skills and goal-setting were also produced. I n addition, the service p u b l i s h ed an article o n critical incident stress management for staff a nd students f o l l o w i ng the t s u n ami disasters i n South A s ia i n December 2004. Counselling s u p p o rt was also p r o v i d ed to students w h o were affected. Career Guidance and Development I n the past year, s ome 5,000 c omp a n i es p l a c ed r e c r u i t m e nt a d v e r t i s eme n ts t h r o u g h t he Un i v e r s i t y 's Career P l a n n i ng a nd D e v e l o pme nt Centre, i n v i t i ng applications for over 14,000 vacancies. To better equip students for emp l o yme n t, career guidance p r o g r amme s, exhibitions, a nd recruitment talks were organized, attracting over 12,000 participants. The Ch i na Career De v e l o pme nt A w a r d P r o g r amme, r u n n i ng i n its eighth year, p r o v i d ed about 150 students w i t h the o p p o r t u n i ty to l e a rn about the socio-political a nd economic systems i n ma i n l a nd China and the workplace culture i n state or private enterprises i n major ma i n l a nd cities. W i t h regard to graduate emp l o yme n t, about 74.3 per cent of the class of 2004 were able to secure f u l l - t i me emp l o yme nt b y the e nd of December 2004, w i t h 75.9 per cent j o i n i ng the c omme r c i al a nd i n d u s t r i al sector, 12.4 per cent j o i n i ng the social a nd p u b l ic organizations.
