I n the same year, the spirit of the universite permeated the campus, as a stream of distinguished scholars, experts, statesmen, a nd business a nd i n d u s t ry leaders f r om different parts of the w o r l d v i s i t ed the Un i v e r s i ty a nd shared their experience a nd expertise w i t h us. T h r o u gh their talks, seminars a nd lectures, faculty, staff a nd students of the Un i v e r s i ty were kept abreast of the most recent d e v e l o pme n ts i n the w o r l d of art a nd literature, science a n d technology, politics a nd business. The Un i v e r s i ty was also p r i v i l e g ed to have em i n e nt i n d i v i d u a ls f r om different wa l ks agreeing to contribute to its cause. Prof. A n d r ew Yao, Tu r i ng A w a r d winner, joined us i n January 2005 as d i s t i n g u i s h ed professor-at-large. Prof. C h e ng Siwei, v i c e - c h a i r man of the S t a n d i ng C omm i t t ee of the N a t i o n al People's Congress, became h o n o r a ry professor i n o ur Fa c u l ty of Business A dm i n i s t r a t i o n. Hema t o l o g i st Prof. K a n Yu e t - wai was a p p o i n t ed h o n o r a ry professor of medicine. PRC M i n i s t er of Co n s t r u c t i on Prof. Wa ng Guangtao was ma de h o n o r a ry professor i n the De p a r t me nt of Architecture, a nd M i n i s t er of Science a nd Technology Prof. X u Gu a n h ua became h o n o r a ry professor i n the Faculty of Engineering. They are a source of i n s p i r a t i on for o ur faculty a nd students i n their quest for excellence. 2005 was also a f r u i t f ul year i n terms of the ma g n i t u de of s u p p o rt we d r ew f r om our benefactors. Just to q u o te some of the ma j or d o n a t i o n s, w e we re pleased to h a ve M r . A l e x K . Ya s umo to d o n a t i ng HK$100 m i l l i on t owa r ds international academic exchange, and another HK$100 m i l l i on f r om the L i Ka Shing F o u n d a t i on for the advancement of the health sciences. A grant of HK$ 50 m i l l i on was obtained f r om the Lee Shau Kee F o u n d a t i on for the d e v e l o pme nt of special areas of excellence, and HK$ 40 m i l l i on f r om the Fok Y i ng Tung F o u n d a t i on t owa r ds the construction of a b u i l d i ng for the satellite remote sensing station. There was also a d o n a t i on of HK $ 30 m i l l i o n f r om the Ch e ng Y u T u ng F o u n d a t i on i n s u p p o rt of the Un i v e r s i t y 's o v e r a ll d e v e l o pme n t, a nd HK$22.5 m i l l i on was received f r om M r . E d w i n S.L. Cheng for General Education and p h i l o s o p hy studies. The University's long-time friends a nd staunch supporters, the H o Sin-Hang F o u n d a t i on a n d the Lee family, i n c l u d i ng the L e e - Hy s an F o u n d a t i on a nd Bei Shan Tang, also c o n t r i b u t ed h u ge sums d u r i ng the year for various causes. These donations, together w i t h the s u p p o rt of other friends f r om various social sectors a nd the a l u m n i c o mm u n i t y, c o n s t i t u t ed a p o w e r f u l force e m p o w e r i ng the U n i v e r s i ty to take f u l l advantage of the Go v e r nme n t 's second ma t c h i ng grant scheme. I n less t h an three mo n t hs since the announcement of the scheme i n June 2005, we were able to raise sufficient private donations to be eligible for m a x i m um matching. Mo re importantly, a culture of fundraising has taken shape at the University. Experience over the year also serves to r em i nd us that f u n d - r a i s i ng s h o u ld be a c o n t i n u o us effort, a nd c o n t i n u i ng c o mm u n i ty s u p p o rt is indispensable for the Un i v e r s i t y 's sustained g r o w th a nd success. The year also saw the r a p id development of our n ew School of Law. I n Ma r ch 2005, the University a p p o i n t ed Dr. the Ho n o u r a b le Sir T.L. Yang a nd Dr. A n t h o ny N e oh SC as the c h a i rman a nd vice- c h a i r man respectively of the Executive Comm i t t ee of the school, a n d P r o f. L i u Pak Wa i, p r o - v i c e - c h a n c e l l o r, as c o mm i t t ee member. Sir T.L. is a d i s t i n g u i s h ed a nd well-respected retired chief justice i n H o n g K o n g, a nd D r . N e o h is an o u t s t a n d i ng s e n i or l e g al p r o f e s s i o n al a n d e d u c a t i o n a l i s t. T he c omm i t t ee p r o v i d es strategic leadership for the School of L aw a nd has w o r k e d closely w i t h its director, Prof. M i k e Mc C o n v i l l e, w h o assumed office i n September 2005, to b u i l d a premier l aw s c h o ol t h at engages i n q u a l i t y t e a c h i ng a n d research.
