Lau, vice-chancellor of the University; and Prof. Dai Longji, university librarian of Peking University The library and the Peking University Library jointly held the 'Exhibition of Select Chinese Rare Books of Peking University Library' i n A p r il 2005 at the exhibition hall of the University Library. There were 47 titles i n 111 volumes of Chinese rare books on display. Amo ng the 47 titles, 10 were classified as 'first class rare books', meaning that they were handwritten or printed i n the Tang, Song and Yuan dynasties. To promote public interest i n mode rn Chinese literature and to celebrate the completion of the digitization project of vertical files of Ho ng Ko ng literature donated by Prof. Lo Wai Luen, the library held a joint ceremony of the 'Exhibition of Autographed Copies of Mode rn Chinese Writers and the Launch of the Vertical File Collection of H o n g K o ng Literature' i n June 2005. The exhibition lasted a month and six talks on modern Chinese literature were held. New Facilities The entire Chung Chi College Elisabeth Luce Moore Library was renovated i n phases starting May 2005. I n early January 2005, a M i c r o f i lm Room was bu i lt to provide a 24-hour controlled environment w i t h stable temperature and relative humidity. This w i l l effectively preserve the m i c r o f o rm collection wh i ch contains invaluable resources on H o ng Ko ng historical sources, contemporary Chinese materials, genealogy records, newspapers and periodicals. I n December 2004, the second floor of the University Library was renovated to raise the ceiling, install energy- saving lighting, and open up a new balcony overlooking the Ma in Reference Room. The balcony on the first floor of the United College Wu Chung Multimedia Library was converted into a courtyard and the outdoor reading area of the N ew Asia College Ch'ien M u Library was refurnished.
