I n p r e p a r a t i on for the i mp l eme n t a t i on of the four-year n o r ma t i ve c u r r i c u l um, capital project proposals based o n existing shortfall and projected spatial requirements were s u bm i t t ed i n A p r i l 2005 for the p r o v i s i on of classrooms, teaching/research laboratories, library, sports and amenities facilities totalling 53,800m 2 of net operational floor area. To cope w i t h the Un i v e r s i t y 's plans for future development, request for granting additional l a nd i n Area 39 was ma de to the government i n Ma r ch 2005. Capital Programmes I n 2004-05, approval was g i v en by the g o v e r nme nt to i mp l eme nt t wo capital projects amo u n t i ng to $280.3 m i l l i o n, viz. a teaching complex at western campus, a nd stabilization of slopes w i t h i n the Un i v e r s i ty campus Phase 13 for 32 features. Meantime, detailed design wo r ks for the project ' A Teaching B u i l d i ng at Ch ak Ch e u ng Street' were i n progress and site wo r ks w i l l be carried out i n due course. D u r i n g the year, capital w o r ks submission was ma de for: (i) 1,500-places student hostels, a nd (ii) Two Integrated Teaching Bu i l d i n gs o n C h u n g C h i Campus. F u ll s u p p o rt was g i v en b y U GC to the student hostel project reflecting the importance of hostel life to u n i v e r s i ty education wh i l st o n ly s u p p o r t - i n - p r i n c i p le was g i v en to the latter. To cater for the f o u r - y e ar n o r m a t i ve c u r r i c u l u m, the project ' T wo I n t e g r a t ed Teaching B u i l d i n g s' was e x p a n d ed to an Integrated Comp l ex i n c o r p o r a t i ng a t h i rd b u i l d i n g. Progress of o n g o i ng capital w o r ks was generally o n track. The superstructure of the first floor of the Ce n t r a l i z ed Science L a b o r a t o r i es B u i l d i n g has b e en c omp l e t e d. B a r r i ng u n f o r e s e en circumstances, the b u i l d i ng w i l l be completed b y late 2006. To m i n i m i ze noise and dust pollution, a n ew me t h od was a d o p t ed for the d emo l i t i on of the existing L i D a k S um Bu i l d i n g. Tender for f o u n d a t i on w o r k s was i n v i t ed w h i l e the s u p e r s t r u c t u re was b e i ng prepared. The Centre for Chinese A r c h a e o l o gy a nd A r t was r e v e r t ed to its o r i g i n al scale f o l l o w i ng the unsuccessful a p p l i c a t i on to the H o n g K o n g Jockey C l u b for t o p - u p f u n d i n g for a n e x p a n d ed scheme. Co n s t r u c t i on was scheduled to commence i n December 2005 targeting for c omp l e t i on b y early 2007.
