H a v i n g sought the expert advice of Prof. C.F. Lee of the C i v il Engineering De p a r t me nt of H K U , a specialist consultant i n the profession, a revised proposal was f o r mu l a t ed for the p r om i n e nt rock slope feature o n Central campus. To m i n i m i ze disturbance to campus activities d u r i ng t e rm time, site w o r ks w i l l be carried out i n t w o consecutive s ummer breaks starting f r om 2006. To preserve the Un i v e r s i t y 's green e n v i r o nme n t, the p o l i cy of m i n i m i z i ng tree f e l l i ng a nd mo re p l a n t i ng is adopted for slope a nd b u i l d i ng works. To facilitate c ommu n i c a t i on w i t h the University c o mm u n i ty a nd the general public, photographs, site plans a nd scope of w o r ks for each project are posted o n the CDO 's website after advice a n d / o r a p p r o v al is obtained f r om the Un i v e r s i ty Steering Comm i t t ee o n E n v i r o nme nt (USCE) and relevant g o v e r nme nt authorities. Safety on Campus The Un i v e r s i ty continues to i mp r o ve safety o n c amp us b y means of measures i n c l u d i ng safety t r a i n i n g f or staff a n d s t u d e n t s; o n - s i te safety i n s p e c t i o ns a n d c o n s u l t a t i o n s; v e t t i ng a n d m o n i t o r i n g l a b o r a t o r y - r e l a t ed research g r a nt a p p l i c a t i o n s; w o r k p l a ce m o n i t o r i n g a n d i m p r o v e m e nt w o r k s ; c o n s t r u c t i on safety p l a ns e v a l u a t i o n, as w e l l as on-site m o n i t o r i ng of c o n s t r u c t i on safety p r o g r amme s. Safety w o r k s h o ps have also been arranged for employees of contractors w o r k i ng o n campus. To r e d u ce the a m o u nt of c h em i c a ls i n the l a b o r a t o r i e s, the D a n g e r o us Go o ds U n i t of the U n i v e r s i ty Safety a nd E n v i r o nme nt Office ( USEO) c o o r d i n a t ed the purchase a nd d e l i v e ry of dangerous goods a nd the collection of chemical wastes f r om laboratories. The Un i v e r s i ty Safety Policy was also r e v i ewed a nd u p d a t ed b y the Comm i t t ee o n Safety. W i t h the j o i nt efforts of the USEO, the Personnel Office, a nd the U n i v e r s i ty H e a l th Service, w o r k - related i n j u ry statistics a nd records of staff safety t r a i n i ng we re ma i n t a i n e d. Safety features o n the d e s i gn of laboratories i n n ew d e v e l o pme n ts we re also g i v en for the c o n s i d e r a t i on of the Camp us De v e l o pme nt Office. P r o g r ammes were set u p to enhance campus hygiene as a safeguard against c ommu n i t y - b a s ed e p i d em i c s. De t a i ls of the c amp us h y g i e ne p r o g r ammes are u n d e r p e r i o d ic e v a l u a t i on a n d modification. Greening the Environment G r e e n i ng the e n v i r o nme nt is one of the key objectives i n c amp us d e v e l o pme n t. The C amp us De v e l o pme nt Office ( CDO) a nd the Estates Ma n a g eme nt Office ( EMO) incorporated landscaping w o r ks i n b o th r o ad a nd b u i l d i ng projects at every o p p o r t u n i ty to enhance the environment. The p l a n t i ng w o r ks a nd architectural designs c omp l e t ed i n the past f ew years have i m p r o v ed the aesthetic appearance a nd q u a l i ty of the campus. A p a r t f r om planting, a tree compensation p l an was i mp l eme n t ed to preserve native or rare tree species a nd those w i t h ecological value, mitigate visual impact to the environment, ma x i m i ze greenery a nd enhance the local ecosystem. I n 2004, E M O L a n d s c a pe S e c t i on p l a n t e d 327 trees, 10,068 s h r u b s, 16,244 f l o w e r p l a n t s, 6,301 groundcovers a nd 6,271m 2 of l a w n to green the e n v i r o nme nt u n d er v a r i o us b u i l d i n g, r o ad a nd slope projects as w e l l as general maintenance w o r k. Campus Wildlife The c amp us of C U H K is h o me to m a n y b i r d s, h o u s i ng a p p r o x i ma t e ly 30 per cent of the 448 species i n H o n g Kong. To let the public k n ow more about birds i n H o n g Kong, b i r d identification charts were placed along the trail of Wei Yu an Lake. The external w a l l of the University L i b r a ry is one of the biggest sw i ft nesting sites i n H o n g Kong. C U H K takes measures to protect the swifts, their chicks and nests a nd care for their living.
