Annual Report 2005–06
Academic Development 19 Links with Mainland China and Taiwan The 2005-06 academic year was a most exciting one because it opened up vast vistas of achievements and opportunities for academic linkages with establishments in Mainland China. CUHK made good progress in collaboration with the Mainland in terms of joint research and academic conferences. The University and the Shenzhen Municipal Government signed a memorandum of cooperation to promote collaboration in education, science research, training of talent, and the establishment of the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Innovation Zone. CUHK has the best research facilities, professional talent and exceptional geographical advantage. Further cooperation will strengthen the economic development of the Greater Pearl River Delta and bring about complementary advantages. The University’s Satellite Remote Sensing Receiving Station, an important facility of the newly established Institute of Space and Earth Information Science, was inaugurated on 5 October 2005. The station collects information useful to Hong Kong, South China, and neighbouring regions. On the same occasion, Prof. Xu Guanhua, Minister of Science and Technology of China, was inaugurated as Honorary Professor of the CUHK Faculty of Engineering. A high-speed connection between the CUHK Campus Network and the Chinese Scientific and Technology Network (CSTNET) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was launched on 28 October 2005 alongside the opening of a Hong Kong mirror site of the Science Museums of China website that aims to make scientific knowledge available to all. The University’s Information Technology Services Centre (ITSC) and the Computer Network Information Centre (CNIC) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences entered into a partnership to promote research collaboration and resources sharing between the Mainland and Hong Kong. Managed by CNIC, CSTNET plays a pioneering role in the Mainland’s Internet industry. It is also the Mainland’s leading scientific research network. On 29 June 2006, CUHK, the Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund and Tsinghua University signed an MOU, and announced their joint efforts to set up the William Mong Eye Centre of Tsinghua University and CUHK in Beijing. By bringing together two top-notch universities in Asia and the philanthropic Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund, the project will foster closer academic and medical collaboration between Hong Kong and Mainland China. Number of Students
