學術發展 Academic Development 21 campus and attended a public lecture jointly organized by CUHK, HKIEd and HKUST on 28 November 2005. The delegation, which included astronauts Fei Junlong and Nie Haisheng, was led by Mr. Hu Shixiang. Mr. Yang Wenchang, Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the HKSAR, delivered a lecture on ‘China’s Road of Peaceful Development and Foreign Policy of Peace’ on 12 October 2005. Prof. Wu Jinglian, senior research fellow at the Development Research Centre of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China spoke on ‘Transformation of the Growth Pattern and China’s Industrialization’ on 16 March 2006. Prof. Ma Songde, Vice-Minister of Science and Technology of China, was inaugurated as Honorary Professor of the CUHK Faculty of Engineering. He delivered a lecture on ‘An Overview of the Hi-tech Research and Development Programme of China and Content-based Image and Video Analysis’ on 11 July 2006. The University is one of the first local participants in the Unified National Colleges Admissions System and is listed as one of the nation’s foremost higher-education institutions. A total of 236 outstanding Mainland undergraduates from 17 provinces and cities were admitted in the academic year 2005 through the system. Among those, 15 students admitted by CUHK ranked among the top 100, and 30 ranked within the top 500 in their provinces/municipalities. The English proficiency of these students was particularly impressive. The average score of the English paper was 130, 150 being full marks. The average score of an arts student from Sichuan Province was 144. A 15-member delegation from the School of Law, led by Prof. Liu Pak-wai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, visited Beijing to strengthen cooperations with the Mainland’s judiciary and procuratorial organs and academic institutions. The delegation met with The People’s Procuratorate of Beijing to explore collaboration possibilities. The University participated in various nationwide competitions with excellent results.
