The University also came to an agreement with the Hong Kong Institute of Education to offer an inter-institutional joint-degree programme in 2006-07: Bachelor of Arts in English Studies and Education. The programme aims at cultivating professionally trained English teachers with a strong knowledge base in English language, English culture and literature, and educational studies. Looking ahead, the University will introduce more double-major, double-degree and interdisciplinary programmes to allow its students greater flexibility in designing their own course of study. Academic Activities As in previous years, the CUHK campus in 2005-06 was vibrant with numerous conferences and seminars hosted by different faculties and departments, and a great number of distinguished academics coming from across the world to visit the University. The Nobel Laureates Distinguished Lecture Series, co-organized with Sun Hung Kai Properties for the first time in 2004-05, was held again this year. On five occasions in two years, nine Nobel laureates and other famous scholars came to Hong Kong at the invitation of the University to give public lectures. Their lectures were well-received and have contributed significantly to the dissemination of knowledge and professional expertise. During the year we also launched the Consuls-General/Diplomats Lecture Series on our campus. Speakers included the Consuls-General of the US, the UK, Japan, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the PRC, and the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC in the Hong Kong SAR.
