The Blue Skies Project for Leader Development Run by the Hong Kong Centre for the Development of Educational Leadership, Blue Skies is a 12-month programme for beginning school principals which matches them with experienced principals to learn about real issues within their school contexts. The programme draws heavily on international research into how beginning principals best learn, and is constantly upgraded through the application of longitudinal impact data, reflective learning journals, peer feedback and other mechanism. The aim of the programme is to embed self-organizing learning networks within the school leadership community. Longitudinal research flowing from the programme is adding to the theoretical knowledge of how leaders learn and to innovate the programme designs for all leaders at all levels. Entering its third year in 2007– 08, the programme had involved over 300 principals. The system, developed by the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, incorporates a number of new technological developments for making high-precision telescope mirrors of near meter-size diameter. It has a unique mechanism for the needed grinding, polishing and figuring processes, guided by efficient tool path selection and execution algorithms. A computer-controlled measurement assembly of automatic optical testing and pattern interpretation serves to enable closed loop quantitative monitoring and fine figuring of the work-piece. Significantly enhancing the technical competitiveness of the Hong Kong optical industry, and making way for migration to upper scale markets currently dominated by overseas makers, the technology received the Technological Achievement Certificate of Merit of the 2007 Hong Kong Awards for Industries. Faculty of Education
