76 Capital Projects In the year under review, encouraging progress was also achieved in various 3+3+4 capital projects. The projects of the Student Amenity Centre and the Centralized General Research Lab Complex (Block 1) in Area 39 were on schedule for submission to the Public Works Subcommittee of the LegCo Finance Committee. The year also saw some revisions in design being made to preserve the environment. The proposal of a 10-storey University Library Extension Building was revisited and changed to a four-storey building with a basement floor extending eastwards under the Forum and the Gate. The Integrated Teaching Complex was reverted to two projects. The two integrated buildings will be located at the site of Pine, Bamboo and Cypress Lodges and the third building at the car park across Station Road. The target completion date of the two projects will remain 2012, though further approval has to be sought from the University Grants Committee. For current projects, the East Wing of the Art Museum was completed in April 2008. The building of the superstructure of the Teaching Complex at Western Campus was completed at the end of 2008. Foundation works for the 1500-place Student Hostels commenced in August 2008. The teaching hotel Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Sha Tin, near the MTR University Station, obtained the occupation permit in June 2008. The Satellite Remote Sensing Receiving Station, (Phase II), located between New Asia and United College, was on schedule despite a delay induced by site difficulties. And the Shenzhen Research Institute Building in Shenzhen received planning approval from the Shenzhen authorities for its design. Promoting a Walking Culture Footbridges, vertical lifts, and footpaths, etc., continued to be installed by the Campus Development Office and the Estates Management Office to encourage walking on campus and to reduce vehicular traffic. The second walking campaign, attended by over 600 staff and students, was organized in November 2007 by the University’s Committee on Health Promotion and Protection. Planting Trees for the Community The CUHK Community Afforestation Scheme kicked off in October 2007, as part of the Corporate Afforestation Scheme of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. Over 2,500 tree seedlings were planted on Grassy Hill, Tai Po Kau.
