Prof. Liu Yunhui (Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering) headed a research team that has developed a web robotic hand-in-hand system capable of transferring the sensation of hand touching over the internet. The team invented a surface electromyography sensing ring, to be worn at the forearm, to measure the motion and force of a human hand, and a low-cost USB Robotic Hand as a haptic display that generates the hand touch feeling and reproduces the hand’s temperature. The invention will revolutionize the expression of emotional feeling on internet chatting platforms, which are already being used to exchange information in a range of medias (e.g. text, images, video), and can also be applied to programmes such as the internet-based rehabilitation of patients with motor impairments due to stroke and other diseases. Retaliatory Measures in the World Trading System Prof. Bryan Mercurio以其有關世界貿易制度下報復行為的論文,獲得中大青年學者研 究獎。 Prof. Bryan Mercurio of the Faculty of Law was awarded a CUHK Young Researcher Award for a highly-regarded article on retaliatory measures in the world trading system. The article, published in the leading specialist journal and currently one of the 10 most viewed articles on the Cambridge University Press website within the last 12 months, uncovers flaws in proposed amendments to the trading rules which would allow for countries violating WTO obligations to ‘buy-out’ of the violation. This research, which considers issues of economic development, multilateral governance and fairness and equality among nations, has already been frequently cited, and has the potential to reshape public policy debate on the issue. Biventricular Pacing in Patients with Bradycardia and Normal Ejection Fraction Prof. Yu Cheuk-man (Department of Medicine and Therapeutics), in collaboration with a number of researchers from Hong Kong, mainland China and Malaysia, conducted an important study to determine whether conventional right ventricular apical pacing had a deleterious effect on left ventricular function in patients with cardiac problems, as had been suggested as early as the 1920s and as observational studies during the past seven years had tended to bear out. In a prospective, double-blind, multicenter study, dubbed Pacing to Avoid Cardiac Enlargement (PACE), Professor Yu and his colleagues confirmed that conventional right ventricular apical pacing resulted in adverse left ventrical remodelling and in a reduction in the left ventricle ejection fraction in patients with normal systolic function. The team also established that these effects could be prevented by biventricular pacing. The team’s findings, which were published in the New England Journal of Medicine , could hasten a significant shift in the techniques commonly used in the pacemakers prescribed to cardiac patients.
