Annual Report 2009–10
56 Summer Programmes Two summer programmes are offered to local and overseas secondary school students and undergraduates each year. The programmes were well received as shown by the increasing number of participants. The Summer Institute, a two-week programme, was held in mid-July for some 200 local and international Secondary Five and Six students (or equivalent) to let them explore their interest in different disciplines before making undergraduates programme choices. The students took two academic modules in medicine, business, engineering, philosophy, social science or science and could reside on campus to experience the vibrant campus life of CUHK. The five-week International Summer School (ISS) was held in late June. It aimed to develop CUHK into an international education hub that offers students an international learning environment and opportunities for cultural exchange during the summer. Over 600 students attended the ISS, of whom more than half were international students from 31 places around the world. Courses in business, engineering, humanities and social sciences were offered by academics from CUHK and prestigious overseas universities, while Putonghua and Cantonese courses were delivered by teachers from the CLC. In Support for Business and Industry In March 2010, CUHK signed an agreement with the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation to enable tenants at the Science Parks and other companies to use the University’s advanced biotechnology facilities. It supports the life science industry, and thus promote Hong Kong’s technological innovation, and benefits particularly small and medium enterprises and start-ups which cannot afford expensive equipment. The transcoding technologies for mobile networks developed by Prof. Lee Yiu-bun Jack of the Department of Information Engineering have been employed in the X-Power service launched by SmarTone-Vodafone in July 2010. The technologies have been deployed in both Hong Kong and Macau. A related video streaming technology has also been deployed in Singapore. In addition, a number of
