66 Scholarships and Financial Assistance During the period under review, the total amount given out in the form of scholarships and financial assistance to students via the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, the Office of Academic Links, the four Colleges of the University and other departments and units was HK$117 million, compared to HK$105.6 million in 2008–09. A total of 5,517 scholarships and prizes administered by the University and the Colleges, an increase by 9% over the previous year, with an aggregate value of HK$101.5 million were awarded to students with outstanding academic achievements. Eighty- one students were awarded the HKSAR Government Scholarships in recognition of their academic and non-academic achievements. The total amount of the HKSAR Government Scholarships received by our students was HK$4.8 million. In addition, 1,034 students were awarded a total of HK$15.3 million to participate in exchange programmes, postgraduate studies, conferences and overseas study tours. A total of 3,487 CUHK students applied for the Tertiary Student Finance Scheme (TSFS) in 2009–10 and 3,160 succeeded in obtaining government grants and/or loans. The total amount of the TSFS grants received by our students was over HK$107 million and for loans, close to HK$38 million.
