Remembrance of Times Past 7 Like other peer institutions, the Chinese University had a lot of planning, development and modification work to do after over a decade of having the three-year system in operation, in order to cope with the return of the four- year programme, and the presence of a double cohort of freshmen in the autumn of 2012. Through the concerted efforts of all colleagues concerned, and working according to meticulous plans drawn up on the basis of careful analysis of student demographics and accurate projection of student needs, the transition to the new order at the Chinese University was smooth and entirely free from the chaos and other inadequacies that had held many university administrators in angst for a good many months. Excellence in Research Academic research is the core activity of the Chinese University, where it is invariably pursued with enthusiasm and vigour. CUHK researchers also seek appropriate opportunities to cooperate with prestigious academic institutes and research facilities located in other parts of the world, in projects of mutual benefit and interest. 傑出研究 學術研究是中文大學的核心工作，校內研 究人員憑着熱誠與幹勁從事研究，也積極 尋找合適機會，與世界頂尖學術和研究機 構合作，共同開展彼此感興趣並有益於雙 方的項目。一如以往，本年度中大的研究計 劃贏得國內外學術界和規管機構讚賞，並 得到研究資助局和其他著名資助機構撥款 支持，更重要的是獲善長慷慨捐助，他們的 捐款或用於設立和支持冠名講座教授席， 或用於興建研究大樓，或用於添置尖端儀 器和設施。本年報內題為「開拓人類知識的 版圖」的一章，摘要介紹本校研究人員在本 年度最矚目的成就，裏面每個故事都是人 類天才與勤奮、耐心與堅毅的精彩結合， 讀之令人深受啟發。
