Remembrance of Times Past 9 During the year under review, the research projects continued to win the recognition of learned societies and regulatory bodies at both the national and the international levels, grants from the Research Grants Council and other prestigious funders, and, significantly, support from benefactors who designated generous endowments for the specific purpose of establishing or supporting named chairs, for the construction of purpose-built buildings for research activities, and for the acquisition of cutting-edge equipment and facilities. Highlights of our researchers’ most outstanding attainments during the year under review are recorded in the chapter titled ‘Pushing Knowledge Frontiers’. Each story shows a happy marriage of human genius with diligence, patience, and fortitude in great measure, and makes for most encouraging reading. Looking Forward A series of activities and events commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the University’s foundation is now on the drawing board, ready to be launched in due course during 2013. Most of the planned events will involve the participation of students, alumni and faculty members past and present, and while some of the conferences and symposia will be highly academic in nature, the majority of the functions and gatherings are aimed at creating a better awareness and understanding of the University’s achievements among the general public. In line with the University’s emphasis on social responsibility and concern for the underprivileged, many events in the celebration programme will be raising the collective awareness of University members’ service activities as well as raising funds for charitable causes. The CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute has been opened and operating. This institute will serve as an education, research and technology transfer centre on the mainland, and contribute to the economic re-engineering and technology development in the Pearl River Delta region. 展望未來 大學創立五十周年的日子臨近，一連串慶祝 活動正在規劃之中，將於 2013 年陸續推出。 已計劃的活動大多包括學生、校友和今昔 教職員的參與，雖然有些會議和研討會屬於 學術性質，但大部分活動旨在令市民大眾更 認識和了解大學的成就。中大重視社會責任 和關懷弱勢社群，因此，許多慶祝活動旨在 加強全體大學成員關注服務活動，並且為慈 善工作籌款。 中大深圳研究院業已開幕和運作，這個本 校位於中國內地開展教育、研究及產業化 工作的基地，將有助促進珠江三角洲地區 的經濟轉型和技術發展。
