Pushing Knowledge Frontiers 29 Honours and Awards Prof. Poon Wai-yin (left), associate dean (education) of the Faculty of Science and professor in the Department of Statistics, was conferred the inaugural UGC Award for Teaching Excellence by the University Grants Committee (UGC), in recognition of her outstanding teaching performance and achievements. In the UGC citation for Professor Poon, she is hailed as ‘a fully committed and selfless academic in advancing learning and teaching in higher education. Her own development as an educator has greatly contributed to her adopting learner- centred approaches in her work, as well as the spreading of such practices. As a driver for change, her leadership in bringing a cultural shift within her institution has been most impressive.’ Prof. Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, Li Ka Shing Professor of Medicine and chairman of the Department of Chemical Pathology, received the AACC-NACB Award for Out- standing Contributions to Clinical Chemistry in a Selected Area of Research from the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) and the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (NACB) for his ground-breaking work in non-invasive prenatal diagnosis. Professor Lo is the first ever Chinese to receive the honour. Prof. Thierry Blu and Prof. Liew Soung-chang of the Faculty of Engineering were elected Fellows of the prestigious Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2012 for their extraordinary accomplishments in scientific research. Professor Blu from the Department of Electronic Engineering was named an IEEE Fellow for his fundamental contributions to approximation theory in signal and image processing. Professor Liew from the Department of Information Engineering was recognized by IEEE for his contributions to wireless communications and networking. 榮譽與獎項 理學院副院長（教育）兼統計學系教授的 潘偉賢教授（下左），獲得大學教育資助 委員會（教資會）頒發首屆「教資會傑出 教學獎」。 教資會讚賞潘教授致力提升高等教育界的 教與學，自從事教育工作以來，不斷求進探 索後，採用以學生為本的教學法。並讚揚她 勇於革新，熱心推廣良好教學方法，在其院 校帶領同儕改變傳統教學觀念。 醫學院李嘉誠醫學講座教授兼化學病理學 系系主任盧煜明教授獲美國臨床化學協會 和美國國家臨床生物化學學院頒發傑出研 究獎，以表揚盧教授開創的無創性產前檢 查在臨床化學研究領域上的重要貢獻。盧 教授是首位獲此殊榮的華人。 工程學院 Thierry Blu 和劉紹強兩位教授， 獲工程學國際權威組織電機及電子工程師 學會頒授 2012 年度院士榮銜。電子工程學 系 Thierry Blu 教授獲選，乃因其對信號與 圖像處理近似理論有重大貢獻；信息工程 學系劉紹強教授則因對無線通信系統和無 線網絡領域有傑出貢獻而獲選。 Prof. Thierry Blu 劉紹強教授 Prof. Liew Soung-chang 盧煜明教授 Prof. Dennis Lo Yuk-ming
