Building Caring Communities ‘Serving the Community’ is one of the five core qualities that Shaw College hopes to imbue their students with. The College encourages its students to use what they have learned to serve the community and the needy. During the year 2011–12, funded by the College’s Caring Heart Community Service Project Scheme, over 50 Shaw students launched nine social service projects to help newly-arrived school children, people with chronic conditions, the ethnic minorities, the elderly, and children without parental care. In one of the projects, 10 students visited a middle school in Fuzhou, Fujian province from 11 to 21 May 2011 to serve as voluntary teachers (above). During the summer of 2012, 24 students enrolled in the College’s general education course ‘Poverty Alleviation and Development in China: Service Learning Project’ and went to Kunming, Yunnan to visit the underprivileged communities of migrant workers. They also served in schools and community centres, and met with volunteers. About 30 Shaw students organized an English learning programme last year for the disadvantaged pupils of Fresh Fish Traders’ School at Tai Kok Tsui. Ten students took part in the ‘Reading. Action. Figure. Club’ project organized by the Hans Andersen Club to help local primary and secondary school students to develop a good reading habit and attitude through a mentorship programme.
