Annual Report 2011–12

In the academic year 2011–12, 23 projects supported by the Knowledge Transfer Project Fund were launched, translating academic knowledge into action to improve the social, cultural, environmental and economic fabric of our society. For the new round of projects in 2011–12, ‘Touch the Community and Touch their Lives’ was one of the criteria for funding. A typical example in promoting communal harmony is the ‘Nurturing Inclusiveness of the Deaf in Hong Kong Society with Empirical Evidence from Sign Linguistics Research’ project from the Faculty of Arts. The project is aimed at transferring knowledge generated from 18 years of sign linguistics research at the University to the local community through seminars, workshops, and electronic platforms. It is an effort to dispel certain long- standing misconceptions about deaf education, language rehabilitation, social welfare for the deaf, communication between the deaf and hearing people, thus promoting social inclusion. The project ‘Collaborative Ambulatory Drug Resources for Elderly (CARxE)—Promoting Medication Safety and Improved Clinical Outcomes among the Elderly Community through Telepharmacy and Outreach Services’ from the Faculty of Medicine is an illustration of the University’s commitment to improve health care. The project identifies and resolves drug-related problems for the elderly, and develops much needed health promotion programmes, including home visits to communicate with the elderly and their caregivers. On the technology transfer front, for the year under review, 146 patent applications were filed across the world, with 41 granted. During the same period, an income of close to HK$19 million was generated through commercialization of intellectual property rights. The new Professional Enhancement Fund has been introduced to support academic and research staff to undertake capacity building initiatives on knowledge transfer, locally or overseas. Since its launch in April 2012, six staff members have been supported by the fund to disseminate what they have learned to the CUHK academic community, so as to create a ripple effect on campus.
