Annual Report 2013–14
Connecting Myanmar Ten CUHK students took part in the programme ‘Connecting Myanmar’ from June to August 2014 to serve at the Thai-Myanmar border and Yangon in Myanmar. Seven of them went to Mae Sot, a town on the Thai side of the border, to renovate kindergartens and primary and secondary schools. One volunteer taught local high school students news writing, photography and interview techniques, equipping them with the journalistic skills for writing stories about their community and political and social issues. Two CUHK students imparted legal knowledge to people in Mae Sot and Yangon, respectively. They taught the people tort law, criminal law, contract law, international law, human rights. Besides lessons, the volunteers organized games, moot courts, debates and mediation simulations to develop the students’ critical thinking and encourage them to express themselves. The legal education was aimed at making them more aware of injustice happening around themselves every day, and stand up for their rights and those of their communities. Golden Dreams Project Four students from the Department of Social Work launched the Golden Dreams project to spread the message of ‘positive ageing’ in the community. The project recruited over 20 university students as volunteers. They helped about 100 senior citizens to realize their dreams, which ranged from learning something new, maintaining physical fitness, to making contributions to the community. The volunteers organized tours to the herbal garden and the dissecting laboratory on CUHK campus, lessons in English and Chinese painting for these senior citizens. The volunteers also organized visits to homes for the elderly for those who wanted to make contributions to society, so that they could help their less fortunate counterparts. The project has achieved its goal of empowering senior citizens in our society. 33
