University Development The year under review saw the University receiving the largest non-government gift ever bestowed upon CUHK, one which provided for an auspicious start to one of the most exciting projects ever to have featured on the University’s drawing board. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, for many years the doyen among benefactors of tertiary institutions in Hong Kong, generously donated HK$1.3 billion to the Chinese University for the development of a private hospital. To be operated as a fully-owned subsidiary of CUHK on a non-profit basis, it will be an edifice with over 500 beds providing quality treatment and health care services to citizens and, at the same time, serving as an important complement to teaching and research work in the Faculty of Medicine. Three other major facilities pertaining to medicine and the life sciences also started to operate during the year under review, namely, the Institute of Ageing, made possible with another substantial grant from the Jockey Club, the Institute of Integrative Medicine, where the integration of Chinese and Western medicine is researched and taught at both the theoretical and the clinical levels, and the Centre for Bioethics, which is a timely response to the rapid advancement of biotechnology and the myriad ethical issues that have thus been engendered. Another innovation of note inaugurated during the year under review was the Pre-incubation Centre (the Pi Centre), a facility to encourage innovation, creativity, entrepreneurship and knowledge transfer. Designed to help students explore possibilities and channels that would ultimately lead to the founding and running of their own businesses, the centre’s efforts have received favourable feedback and support from both students and major promoters of industries and enterprises in Hong Kong. The proposed site of the private hospital near the University MTR Station CUHK Annual Report 2014 – 2015 5
