The full details may be found in the chapter on this subject, but it is a joy to note here some of the exciting discoveries and inventions that occurred on our campus during the past year. Projects that invoked international recognition and garnered accolades from the global academic community mainly occurred in the fields of science, engineering and medicine, and they included, in random order, the discovery of a new clue to male fertility, unveiling the genome of dust mites, the discovery of gene mutation causing a novel form of spinocerebellar ataxia, the discovery of a new plant-specific protein, the discovery of a new DNA, a face recognition system with the highest accuracy in the world, high- energy-density redox flow batteries, an ankle-robot to aid stroke patients in rehabilitation, new discovery in the formation of massive stars, and a new material for bone fixation in osteoporosis- related bone fractures. All these projects, while meritorious in their own rights as academic undertakings, are also directly relevant to medicine and health care, the environment, ecology, and other branches of human knowledge that impact beneficially on the quality of life of all, and give the lie to the erroneous but popular belief that high-end academic research is often remote from the life and welfare of the common man. Serving and Caring During the year under review, the University continued its policy on facilitating students’ participation in community services and aid programmes both local and abroad, by exploring and identifying serving opportunities, providing training and resources, and helping students to realize their outbound service missions. The I • CARE Programme, an umbrella scheme initiated by the University in 2011 to create, coordinate and encourage service projects, went from strength to strength and supported 14 student social service projects in 2014–15. I • CARE, from its University-sponsored vantage point, was in a position to have 香港中文大學年報 CUHK Annual Report 2014 – 2015 7
